TULOU INTERACTIVE THEATER
February - March 2019
01 Design Brief
Tulou interactive theater is a project designed for Shenzhen Advent Children’s Museum by Spacetech Design Lab. This project uses Projection Mapping and Physical Computing to create a story of the daily life of ancient Hakka people. It not only shows the peaceful living habits but also tells how Hakka people take advantage of Tulou to fight against cruel robbers.
Client: Maison Advent Children's Museum
02 Visual Style Research: How to better show Hakka style?
After being told to illustrate Chinese Hakka style, I searched unique dress style and architecture for Hakka people.
Women love bright colors show their positive attitudes towards life.
To better show Hekka people, I used color elements from their lives.
03 Process: How to be consistent with model?
To create characters with bright colors, I need to first arrange traditional elements in characters.
Due to projection mapping on table, I need to design characters with top view.
Normally, image in top view won't contain much details, but I have to make sure every character has enough details.
So drawing wasn't difficult - maintaining details in a right angle was. This is some visual trails.
04 Final Animation
Overall, the colors successfully portray Hekka people and the animation works well with projection. Although I spent some time on adjusting views when begins, communications with my boss helped me with completing all the work in time.
Furthermore, for me this was a good exercise in training various tools and skills together.
